ESPHome Info Panel

I wanted one glance at the door to answer the questions I ask before leaving: what is the weather doing, when is the next bus, and which bin goes out?

Reflective LCD panel showing the weather, next bus and recycling schedule

A front-door display for the next bus, weather and bin collection, built around a reflective LCD.

It is built on the Waveshare ESP32-S3-RLCD-4.2, a 4.2-inch board with a 400 × 300 reflective LCD. It uses ambient light rather than a backlight, so it is easy to read in daylight without glowing in the room at night. The panel shows the date and time, weather, the next bus, upcoming bin collections, and a few readings from the device itself.

The bus data took a detour. My first journey-planner integration could return a walk and a transfer, and the panel labelled that as the next bus from my stop. Switching to a departure board gave me the actual next departure, with its own line and delay. Line and direction both matter: the same route can leave a stop in either direction.

Home Assistant supplies the information. Change the entity names and the panel can be pointed at a different setup without reflashing it.

The ESPHome device exposes the panel's sensors and controls to Home Assistant.

This is the configuration running in my home, not a dashboard builder. The screen layout is hand-placed in code, and several of the Home Assistant entities need to be set up for the particular household. The README explains what is tested on hardware and what still needs testing with another setup.
